Buhari will not probe past corrupt Nigerian leaders if they repent – APC

If elected Nigeria’s president in 2015, former military leader, Muhammadu Buhari, will not immediately go after past leaders, politicians and officials, who stole the country dry and committed other offences, his party, the All Progressives Congress, APC, said Monday.
Mr. Buhari will be more focused on solving Nigeria’s many problems left behind by the former leaders, APC chairman, John Oyegun, said.
“The first moments of a Buhari Presidency, the outlook is on the future,” said Mr. Oyegun. “The message will be clear, whatever you engage in before that is detrimental to the people of this country, please stop it, change has come.”
Mr. Buhari’s anti-corruption record as military leader is seen as his strongest credential as he seeks to challenge President Goodluck Jonathan for the top job in 2015.
With corruption at one of its worst levels in Nigeria, Mr. Buhari’s supporters project him as a tough leader who will not tolerate fraud, and who will be brave to bring past and present corrupt officials at all levels, to justice.
But his party
said the scale of decay Nigeria faces currently is so huge the retired general would be more concerned fixing them once he gets to office, than going after past treasury looters.
The party’s chairman, Mr. Oyegun, however said while Mr. Buhari would be willing to give officials who stole in the past a chance to mend their ways, he will clampdown on those bent on continuing with corruption.
“The only people I think should fear the Buhari Presidency are those who do not want change. Those who want to continue with business as usual are those who want to continue to profit from the level of corruption in the society,” Mr. Oyegun told reporters on Monday in Benin, Edo State.
“We will have no apologies for people like that. But it is clear that from the Buhari perspective and that for the APC, the future of the people of this country is too important for us to spend valuable time trying to dig into the past,” he said.
He said those who fail to change would be the ones to face the music.
“It is time for change and anybody who decides that he does not want to be part of change and want business as usual that is his choice,” he said.
The APC leader said it was untrue that a Buhari presidency will send Nigerians to jail, and accused the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, of spreading that claim.

Jonathan’s endurance plea: MURIC calls on president to lead by example

A Muslim group, Muslim Rights Concern, MURIC, has called on President Goodluck Jonathan to lead the way and lead by example in response to the president’s call on Nigerians to endure the hardship that is expected to come with decline in the price of crude oil in the international market.
MURIC, n a statement signed by its Director, Prof. Ishaq Akinola, described President Jonathan’s call as a good piece of advice but added that Nigerians are looking forward to practical example, contending that available indices show that this is still lacking in the present leadership.
The state reads in part: “Mr. President is not leading us by example if it is true that he still wants to buy a new aircraft. The presidency has explanations to render to tax-payers if it is also true that the proposed aircraft will be the fourth since he took office in the year 2010. Why must President Jonathan buy four aircrafts in four years? Is the president walking his talk?
“The presidency also owes Nigerians explanations if it is true that friends and associates donated staggering sums of money amounting to millions at the launching of Mr. President’s campaign fund for the 2015 elections which netted N21 billion. Nigerians are worried that the presidency allowed huge donations contrary to Section 91(9) of the Electoral Act which disallows donations higher than N1 million.
“Equally nauseating is the sum of N215,635,713 allegedly set aside in the 2015 budget for foodstuff and catering equipment for the presidency. Does the presidency replace equipment every year? If so, is the presidency enduring? If the answer to the last question is ‘No’, President Jonathan has no moral right to ask Nigerians to endure. The buck stops at his table and he must lead by example”
The group called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to be awake to its responsibilities. “INEC must ensure that the rule of law prevails. We are disappointed that INEC did nothing even after the disclosure of the huge donations which violated the rules”.
MURIC thereafter demanded that no new aircraft should be purchased by the presidency, adding that redundant and frivolous expenditure in the 2015 budget should be struck out.

Drama: Fayemi should be called falsehood, he’s a shameless liar – Fayose’s aide

The immediate past governor of Ekiti State, Dr Kayode Fayemi has been described as a “shameless liar” whose first name is falsehood.
Special Assistant to Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, while reacting to comments made on Akure, Ondo State Radio Station on Friday, said; “Since Fayemi had admitted that Fayose left N3.5 billion in the State treasury when he left office in 2006 and not N10.4 billion as claimed by Fayose, Fayemi should also be honest enough to tell the whole world how much he left in the treasury of Ekiti State when left office on October 16, 2014.”
Olayinka, who said no amount of falsehood and image laundering can bring Fayemi back to the positive mindset of Ekiti people, added that; “It is funny that Fayemi is embarking on campaign six months after he was defeated in the entire 16 local councils in the State, including his own local council.”

Chris Rock Files for Divorce From Wife Malaak Compton-Rock

Chris Rock and his wife Malaak Compton-Rock are ending their marriage, amicably.
The two are parents to two daughters, ages 12 and 10. News about their split was confirmed on Sunday, three days after Christmas.
"Chris Rock has filed for divorce from his wife, Malaak," the actor's rep told E! News. "This is a personal matter and Chris requests privacy as he and Malaak work through this process and focus on their family."
"After much contemplation and 19 years of marriage, Chris and I have decided to go our separate ways," Compton-Rock, 45, said in a statement to People magazine. "Being fortunate enough to lead a life of service by working with those most vulnerable makes me well aware of life's blessings, even when faced with difficulties."
"While recognizing that this is a significant change, my children remain at the center of my life and their well-being is my top priority," she added. "It is in this spirit that I sincerely ask that their privacy and the privacy of our family be respected during this transition in our lives."
Rock, 49, who stars in the recently-released comedy film Top Five, which he also directed and wrote, met his wife in 1993. She is the founder and executive director of the non-profit organization styleWORKS, which helps women make a successful transition from welfare to the workforce.
The Emmy-winning actor and comedian and his wife had wed in 1996 at the posh Oxon Hill Manor in Oxon Hill, Maryland. Two years later, the New York Daily News reported their marriage was on the rocks. The pair denied the report.
A source told E! News on Sunday that the couple has been "having marriage issues for years" and that they have "been living separate lives for some time."
"They care deeply for their kids' well-being and they wanted to wait to make any announcement," the source added. "They feel this is the best decision for their kids and each other.
When his wife was pregnant with their first child, Rock talked about his relationship with Compton-Rock in an interview with Oprah Winfrey for O magazine.
"Our child is such a 9/11 baby," he said. "I said to myself, 'The world's falling down, and what have I done with my life?' We've been married five years, but we've never planned anything—it has always been about today. After September 11, I said, 'It's time. Let's have a baby.'"
He said at the time he enjoyed being married. When asked if marriage was difficult for him in the beginning, he said, "Yes. It's hard working in the benevolent dictatorship of show business and then coming home to a democracy."
"I wouldn't say rocky—it was just life," he added. "I had a lot going on back then, and I couldn't trust many people around me. I met so many people after I got rich and famous, and I learned that you can't ultimately trust people unless they were your friends when you were broke."

Strong earthquake shakes southern Philippines

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — A strong earthquake shook parts of the southern and central Philippines on Monday, frightening people but causing no serious damage or injuries, officials said.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake measured magnitude 6.1 and struck at a depth of 38 kilometers (23 miles).
Government seismologist Jane Punongbayan said it was centered under the ocean 205 kilometers (127 miles) northwest of Zamboanga city and was too deep and far from urban areas to cause any damage or injuries. She said aftershocks were expected.
Zamboanga city police director Angelito Casimiro said people attending Mass at a Roman Catholic shrine exchanged glances when the ground began to shake mildly, but the ceremony proceeded after the shaking stopped.

Egypt urged to free al-Jazeera staff on arrest anniversary

In an interview with the BBC, Mr Greste's father Juris said he was optimistic that the New Year would see a "major turning-point".
"The first trial was full of flaws and controversy," he said.
"We believe that the only decision that the Court of Cassation can make is to overturn the original verdict. Therein will be Egypt's opportunity to demonstrate the integrity and independence of its appeals system."
The court will on Thursday begin examining whether the proper legal procedures were followed in the case of the journalists and four Egyptian students who were convicted alongside them.
It could either uphold the guilty verdict given by the court which tried them earlier this year or quash it, in which case a retrial would be ordered.
Uncertainty
Mr Fahmy's fiancee, Marwa Omara, told the BBC that she was concerned about the length and uncertainty of the appeal process.
The Court of Cassation's judges meet for a week every month, but there is no timeframe for a decision. Ms Omara said it might take up to a year to be resolved, one way or the other.
Mr Fahmy's lawyers have called on him to be released on medical grounds while the case continues. They say he had surgery in mid-November on his right arm, which he broke days before his arrest, and has not received adequate treatment for his Hepatitis C. Below is a pic of the three journalists

2015: Unarmed policemen to be deployed at all polling units

The Nigerian Police Force has said unarmed policemen will be deployed into various polling units during the 2015 elections. The Police PRO, Emmanuel Ojukwu stated that three unarmed policemen would be at each polling station to monitor the election and secure electoral materials, noting that this would be done with other security agencies. In addition, he said the police high command had prepared for a successful transition process and had equally trained its personnel to conduct themselves in a professional manner. When asked what plans the force has to avert rigging and electoral violence, he said the police had never been partial to any political party, noting that the police would “do what they have always done.” He said, “The police have never been partial to any party. During the elections, we will do what we have always done to ensure that the election is free, fair and transparent. Three unarmed policemen will be deployed to each polling unit and they would be supported by security operatives from other agencies to ensure a credible election.”

TERROR: Bomb blast rocks football field in Yobe, kills on

An explosive planted in a football field has killed one person in Potiskum, Yobe State, witnesses said. Residents of Potiskum told ChannelsTV that the explosion occurred at the Arikime Primary School playing ground and killed a sugar-cane vendor who was heading home after the day’s trading. According to reports, the bomb was targeted at footballers using the playing ground and went off around 6:30pm on Sunday.

The bomber, according to witnesses who spoke to ChannelsTV, was aiming at killing early morning football players who often besiege the busy Arikime playing ground for early exercise only to be triggered prematurely by the sugar-cane seller. “The innocent wheelbarrow pusher runs into the embedded explosive leading to his death and I can assure you that the death toll this morning would have been much if not for the early trigger which claimed just one life,” a witness told ChannelsTV. However, security agencies are yet to confirm the Sunday explosion.

I want a man like the man in the book of proverbs – Actress, Juliet Mgborukwe

TV personality cum actress, Juliet Mgborukwe has stated that she wants a man like the man in the book of proverbs. The actress who seems to have had her heart shattered by several men revealed she still believes in love. According to her,“My ideal man is the man in the Book of Proverbs. A man who will let me live my dreams, shine without being intimidated and be proud of me just like I am of him; that is a rare species. For me, love means selflessness which is giving yourself solely to the happiness and well-being of others. I have had my fair share of heartbreak. Really, it has a very bitter taste.” Juliet also revealed she has been a victim of sex-for-role scandals that has plagued Nollywood for a long time.

She said, “It is an unpleasant situation; very unpleasant I must confess. I have faced such scenarios before but I never gave in. You see, for me, acting is a passion. I am not desperate for roles; not at all. I have turned down such offers and I am glad I did. I won my award based on sheer credibility so I don’t see why I should sleep with anybody to get a role. That would be belittling myself; it is like the Esau Syndrome which is selling your birthright for a plate of porridge. The movies I have featured were based on merit. There are still good producers and directors out there who want to make real movies with excellent cast and those are the kind of people I have been working with.”

Man charged with domestic violence for refusing to take his wife to McDonalds

A man was charged with domestic violence after refusing to take his wife out for dinner at fast food restaurants, according to court documents filed in India. The bizarre charge was filed in family court, where the wife of Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, asked a judge to dissolve her marriage.

The woman told the judge that she is a victim of domestic violence because her husband refused to take her out on dates and eat with her at fast food restaurants such as McDonald’s. The husband has denied his wife’s allegations of domestic violence. The couple has been married for several years. So far, the judge has rejected the woman’s grounds for divorce, and ordered the couple to resolve their differences and visit a marriage counselor.
