Nigerians should pay less for fuel, says labour

The Nigeria Labour Congress has accused the Federal Government of denying Nigerians the benefits accruing from the falling crude oil price.
The President, NLC, Abdulwahed Omar, in a post on the congress’ website, said the situation on the ground pointed to the fact that the government did not have a structured response to the present situation in the crude oil market.
The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Nigerian economy, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, while speaking on the 2015 budget proposal, had said, “Our preliminary estimates show that the break-even crude oil price, at which the landed cost of Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) will equal our current pump price of N97 per litre so that there will no longer be subsidy, is about $60 per barrel.”
The NLC said by implication, Nigerians are expected to pay less than N97 per litre for petrol, once oil price slumps to $60 or lower per barrel.
As of Friday, Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, stood at $49 per barrel, meaning Nigeria is due for a drop in pump price of petrol.
The NLC boss said, practically, all the measures muted or taken so far by government showed a smack of shock and panic, and clearly exposed the country’s vulnerability.
Omar noted that the current situation could have been avoided, if labour’s earlier advice had been taken.
He said, “For instance, we recall advising government time without number to boost the capacity of domestic refining, instead of depending on imports, whose landing cost is dependent on prevailing exchange rate and other motivations not far from usury.”
Omar stressed that, “We still stand by our time-tested position that the only permanent solution to the crisis of petroleum products pricing is adequate domestic refining. Accordingly, we urge government to put in place realistic appropriate legislation and policy in order to realise this.”
The NLC boss stated that the Congress had urged the Federal Government to diversify the economy from oil by developing other sectors.
Omar also said in spite of the presence of a multi-agency task force in the Niger Delta, crude oil theft became phenomenal in 2014, accounting for as much as 30 per cent of national output.
This, he noted, had created loss of revenue and divestments, saying that, “closely linked to this horrendous crime is the degradation of the environment by illegal refineries, oil spills, cover-ups and related incidents.”
Omar further said despite the rating of Nigerian economy in 2014 as the biggest in Africa, there was little by way of practical performance, as lending rates remained high making the cost of doing business unreasonable.

Governor Ramalan Yero of Kaduna has threatened to unleash a violent ‘revenge’ on anyone who attacks his campaign train, offices and vehicles.
Yero who spoke in Hausa to his supporters urged them to swiftly ‘revenge’ any attack on his campaign by any person “born of woman”.
“If you are born of a woman, please pelt us with stones, when we go out for campaigns. We dare you to destroy or burn our vehicles. Burn our House,” the governor said. “I swear by Allah, anyone who does any of these things, we will revenge.”
In the last two weeks, there have been incidents of political violence in Rivers, Plateau and Gombe States, where supporters of different political parties launched gun attacks on opponents, bombed party offices and torched campaign vehicles.
Mr. Yero spoke days after all presidential candidates for the February elections committed to non-violence before, during and after the polls.
Addressing his supporters, a furious Mr. Yero threatened to stop Mr. El-Rufai from entering Kaduna State henceforth.
He said as governor, he has the power to stop the former minister from even leaving his house.
“If I say you should not come to Kaduna, I swear you cannot come. If I say you should not leave your house, I swear you cannot leave,” Mr. Yero said.
Despite being the home state of Vice President Namadi Sambo, Kaduna, the former capital of the northern part of Nigeria, also has a strong APC base, giving Mr. El Rufai wide support too.

In his address, Mr. Yero said he also has the power to demolish the former Minister’s house if he wishes to.
“If I say they should demolish your House, I swear by Allah, they would demolish it immediately,” he said. “If you think we cannot do it, try us and see, continue with what you are doing, by God’s grace we will show you,” Mr. Yero said.
Mr. Yero also threatened to deal with APC supporters if they dare attack the campaign trail of the PDP.

West African Leaders to create anti boko-haram force

Leaders of West African countries will seek authority from the African Union to create a multi-national force to fight islamic terrorist sect, Boko Haram in Nigeria. Current chairman ECOWAS, President John Mahama of Ghana told Reuters on Friday. He said any such force would represent the most robust international response yet to the militants who have killed thousands over the last year in their campaign for an Islamic caliphate and have also launched cross border attacks into Niger and Cameroon. Boko Haram is seen as the most serious security threat to Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country and its biggest energy producer, but Mahama said the group and militants in Somalia, Kenya, Mali and elsewhere posed a wider risk.

“Terrorism is like a cancer and if we don’t deal with it, it will keep going. It threatens everybody in the sub region. When it comes to terrorism nobody is too far or too near,” he said. It will take months before an African Union force could be set up and key issues such as who would command it, the location of its headquarters and its financing remain undecided, he said. Once set up, however, the African Union could ultimately seek a United Nations Security Council mandate to take over the force as happened in Sudan’s Darfur region, he said. Mahama who has been accused of not doing enough to combat Boko Haram, said “Nigeria is taking military action and Cameroon is fighting Boko Haram, but I think we are increasingly getting to the point where probably a regional or a multinational force is coming into consideration.”

House of Reps orders probe of N3.4bn monthly payment to Ajaokuta Steel Company

The House of Representatives has mandated its Committee on Steel to probe the N3.4 billion being spent as monthly salaries for staff of Ajaokuta Steel Company, Kogi. The committee is also charged to investigate the current developments in the company and report back to the House. These were sequel to a motion moved by Rep. Abbas Tajuddeen (APC-Kaduna), and thereafter referred to the House Committee on Steel for further consideration. Tajuddeen had said the services of foreign consultants were engaged because the company had failed to live up to expectations, NAN reports. “In spite of the fact that the company is conceived and built to facilitate the industrialisation and economic transformation of Nigeria, it has failed to fulfill those expectations. “Hence the engagement of consultants from the United States of America and India under the technical management contracts for 10 years’’.

He said Iron and Steel Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ISSSAN), in conjunction with Engineering Workers Union of Nigeria (EWUN), addressed news conference on Sept. 5, 2014. “The two associations said the monthly wage bill for 2,900 staff of the company was actually N288 million, and not N3.4 billion.’’ He called for legislative intervention to complement the efforts of the Federal Government to revive the steel company and bring it back to a functional state. The 1999 Constitution empowers the National Assembly to direct or cause to be directed an investigation aimed at exposing corruption, inefficiency or waste in the administration of funds appropriated by it. The steel company, which was inaugurated in 1983, was expected to be the largest steel company in Africa, accounting for about 70 per cent of the world’s steel production.
