Mexico charges mayor's wife over missing case
Maria de los Angeles Pineda is main suspect of being behind kidnappings of 43 students in Iguala that rocked country.
The wife of the ex-mayor of Iguala, the Mexican city where 43 college students went missing in September and are feared dead, has been jailed indefinitely on suspicions of masterminding the abductions that rocked the country, prosecutors have said.
Maria de los Angeles Pineda, who had been held under provisional arrest, has been transferred to a high security prison in the western state of Nayarit from the capital Mexico City.
On Monday, a judge issued a warrant for her pretrial detention "for her likely role in committing organised crime ... and operations with funds of illicit origin," said Tomas Zeron, who leads the criminal investigation unit of the prosecutor's office.
Pineda and her husband Jose Luis Abarca, Iguala's former mayor, have been named by prosecutors as the "probable masterminds" of the kidnappings allegedly carried out to prevent opposition demonstrations.
The students went missing September 26, in an apparent massacre by a police-backed gang that sparked nationwide protests and caused a crisis for President Enrique Pena Nieto.
Confessions made during the investigation have indicated that Abarca ordered police to crack down on the students to stop them from protesting at a public event his wife was to lead.
Authorities say the aspiring teachers vanished after gang-linked police attacked their buses in the city of Iguala, allegedly under orders from the mayor and his wife in a night of terror that left six other people dead.
The police then delivered the young men to members of the Guerreros Unidos drug gang, who told investigators they took them in two trucks to a landfill, killed them, burned their bodies and dumped them in a river.
For now, only one of the students has been positively identified from charred remains, which leaves little hope of finding the 42 others.
On Christmas Eve, the students' parents held a protest under heavy rain in front of the Los Pinos presidential palace.

Teresa Giudice Begins Federal Prison Sentence
The married mother of four, who rose to fame via Bravo's The Real Housewives of New Jersey in 2009, left her Montville Township mansion shortly after midnight in the back seat of a black SUV driven by her lawyer, James J. Leonard Jr. The 42-year-old reality star surrendered just before 3 a.m., seven hours ahead of her scheduled intake. "She was ready," her lawyer said in a statement to NJ Advance Media. "Teresa is a very strong woman. She won't have any problems in there." According to Leonard, Teresa's early surrender was negotiated with prison officials over several phone calls on New Year's Eve. "When we arrived at Danbury, everyone we encountered was extremely courteous and respectful," he shared.
Leonard also told ABC News, "I think she was anxious to get in, get this thing started, get it behind her, and get back to her family. Her four girls are her primary focus."
She is at Federal Correctional Institution in Danbury, Conn. It's the same minimum-security prison camp that once housed musician Lauryn Hill and heiress Leona Helmsley, both of whom served time for tax evasion. It also inspired the Netflix series Orange Is the New Black, based on Piper Kerman's memoir.
Teresa was told she should be "friendly but guarded" at the prison, and to savor moments with her family, Leonard said. "They told her to keep her head up, that she would make it through," he explained. Teresa did not release a statement prior to her surrender. However, her daughterGia Giudice tweeted a message at 10:41 p.m. EST Sunday, just as her mom's lawyer arrived: "support system is unreal #soblessed."
Upon completion of her 15-month sentence, Teresa's husband of 15 years, Joe Giudice, 42, will serve 41 months in prison. Joe then faces the possibility of deportation, as the native Italian is not a U.S. citizen.
The Giudices filed for bankruptcy in October 2009. Nearly four years later, in a 39-count indictment, the Bravolebrities were charged with conspiracy to commit mail fraud and wire fraud, bank fraud, making false statements on loan applications and bankruptcy fraud. In November 2013, the Giudices were indicted on an additional two fraud charges. They pleaded guilty to financial fraud in March 2014, and while in court, the couple admitted hiding assets from bankruptcy creditors and submitting false loan applications to obtain about $5 million in mortgages and construction loans. Joe also pleaded guilty to failing to pay taxes. The Giudices were sentenced in October 2014.
A federal judge staggered the sentences in deference to the couple's daughters: Gia Giudice, 13,Gabriela Giudice, 10, Milania Giudice, 8, and Audriana Giudice, 5.

AFTER CRASH, GIRL WALKS THROUGH WOODS TO SAFETY
The National Transportation Safety Board is expected to arrive at the site of a plane crash in Kentucky in which a 7-year-old girl survived and four of her family members were killed.
The NTSB was expected to brief the media at some point Sunday.
The pilot reported engine trouble on Friday night and then air traffic controllers lost contact with the plane. About 40 minutes later, 7-year-old Sailor Gutzler showed up at Larry Wilkins' home, bloodied and whimpering.
Authorities say Sailor, dressed in a short-sleeve shirt, shorts and one sock, walked about a mile in near-freezing temperatures through thick briar patches and woods before she found Wilkins' home.
She had a broken wrist and went to the hospital. She was later released to a relative from Nashville, Illinois.
When the small plane crashed into the woods, 7-year-old Sailor Gutzler called out to her family. No one responded.
She thought they might be knocked out, or possibly dead. Either way, police said, she knew she needed to get help.
So, bleeding and alone, Sailor, dressed in a short-sleeve shirt, shorts and one sock, walked about a mile in near-freezing temperatures through thick briar patches and woods before she found Larry Wilkins' home. She knocked on the door, and he answered to find a thin, black-haired girl, whimpering and trembling.
"She literally fell out of the sky into a dark hole and didn't have anybody but her own will to live and get help for her family," Kentucky Police Lt. Brent White said. "Absolutely amazing."
Wilkins said the girl had a "bloody nose, bloody arms, bloody legs, one sock, no shoes, crying."
"She told me that her mom and dad were dead, and she had been in a plane crash, and the plane was upside down," Wilkins said.
Federal Aviation Administration officials arrived at the crash scene Saturday to try to determine why the small Piper PA-34 crashed on Friday evening, killing four people, including the girl's parents, Marty Gutzler, 48, and his wife, Kimberly Gutzler, 46, authorities said.
Also killed were Sailor's sister Piper Gutzler, 9; and cousin Sierra Wilder, 14. All were from Nashville, Illinois.
The plane reported engine trouble and lost contact with air traffic controllers around 5:55 p.m. CST, authorities said. Controllers tried to direct the pilot to an airport 5 to 7 miles from the crash scene.
About 40 minutes later, 911 dispatchers received a call from Wilkins.
Wilkins said he brought the girl inside, got a washcloth and "washed her little face off and her legs."
"Brave little girl, outstanding little girl," he said. "I feel real bad for her."
The girl had a broken wrist, but was coherent and calm when interviewed by authorities, White said.
White and Wilkins both described the terrain she walked through as heavily wooded with thick brush. White said the girl traversed two embankments, a hill and a creek bed. Wilkins said the temperatures were below 40 degrees when the girl showed up at his door.
The girl was treated at a hospital and released to a relative, police said.
In Nashville, a man stepped outside the family's white, split-level home on Saturday and politely waved off a reporter.
"Not now," he said, his head lowered, before he stepped back inside.
Neighbors said Marty and Kim Gutzler had lifelong roots in the largely rural southern Illinois town about 50 miles east of St. Louis.
Marty ran the furniture store that his father started, and the couple was well-known and well-liked, said neighbor Carla Povolish.
With two basketball hoops in the driveway, the Gutzlers' home was the center of neighborhood fun on a block full of children.
"All the kids in the neighborhood are just so upset about this," she said.
Povolish said the two sisters - Sailor and Piper - were together constantly.
"That's what's going to be so devastating for the little one," she said.
The FAA said late Friday that the plane had taken off from Tallahassee Regional Airport, Florida, and was bound for Mount Vernon, Illinois. Sailor told police the family had been to Key West, Florida.
Attorney Kent Plotner, who was serving as family spokesman, said the Gutzler family was devastated.
"We ask that you respect our privacy at this difficult time. Please pray for us, especially for Sailor Gutzler," the family said in a statement.
Kaley Cuoco: My Controversial Comments About Feminism Were "Taken Out of Context"
Serving an apology. Several days after Kaley Cuoco's questionable comments about feminism in the February 2015 issue of Redbook were published online, the actress took to Instagram on Thursday, Jan. 1, to clarify her statement.
In the mag, Cuoco, 29, was asked whether she considers herself a feminist. "Is it bad if I say no?" the Big Bang Theory actress replied. "It's not really something I think about... Things are different now, and I know a lot of the work that paved the way for women happened before I was around...I was never that feminist girl demanding equality, but maybe that's because I've never really faced inequality."The 8 Simple Rules alum went on to say that she enjoyed cooking for and "serving" her husband Ryan Sweeting, whom she married one year ago on New Year's Eve. "I cook for Ryan five nights a week. It makes me feel like a housewife; I love that," Cuoco told Redbook. "I know it sounds old-fashioned, but I like the idea of women taking care of their men. I'm so in control of my work that I like coming home and serving him."
Critics, however, did not appreciate this coming from one of TV's highest-paid actresses.
On Thursday, Cuoco responded to the controversy, claiming that her intention was never to offend. "In my Redbook article, some people have taken offense to my comments regarding feminism," the star wrote to her 1.2 million followers. "If any of you are In the 'biz' you are well aware of how words can be taken out of context."
